Most technologies change what we do.
Artificial intelligence is changing how we think.
That distinction matters. Because once thinking itself becomes mediated, everything built on top of it — work, identity, trust, even reality — begins to shift in ways that are difficult to see, but impossible to reverse.
For much of the past two years, AI has been discussed as a tool: a faster search engine, a better assistant, a productivity multiplier. That framing is already outdated.

It is simple, repeatable, and increasingly universal:

This loop now sits at the start of thinking itself. People do not begin with a blank page, or a question, or even a search. They begin with AI.
The implications are profound.
When a system becomes the default starting point for cognition, it stops being a tool and becomes infrastructure. It is no longer something you use. It is something you use to use everything else.
That shift is already visible in everyday behaviour:
- Work is increasingly structured as prompt → rewrite → output cycles
- Decisions are pre-processed through AI before being made
- Communication is drafted, softened, or amplified through AI mediation
- Even emotional responses are increasingly rehearsed through AI interaction
The result is not simply efficiency. It is dependency.
When thinking becomes mediated,reality becomes negotiated.
Work without authorship
The first domain to feel this shift has been work.
In traditional models, work begins with intent and ends with output. In AI-mediated systems, work begins with generation and ends with selection.
The difference is subtle, but critical.
Where once individuals produced work, they now assemble it. Where once competence was demonstrated through creation, it is now demonstrated through direction.
This creates a strange tension.
On one hand, productivity rises. Tasks are completed faster, more consistently, and often at higher technical quality.
On the other, differentiation collapses.
When the same system generates the same structures for millions of users, outputs begin to converge. Language standardises. Ideas flatten. Originality becomes harder to detect — and therefore harder to value.
This is not a failure of the technology. It is a natural consequence of shared cognitive infrastructure.
Thinking, outsourced
More consequential still is what happens to cognition itself.
AI does not just accelerate thinking. It initiates it.
People increasingly rely on AI not just to refine ideas, but to generate the first version of them. Over time, this shifts the locus of thought from internal to external.
The result is what might be called cognitive outsourcing.
This does not eliminate intelligence. It redistributes it. But it also introduces a paradox:
The more capable the system becomes, the less frequently independent cognitive initiation occurs.
In other words, the system increases what we can do, while quietly reducing how often we begin doing it ourselves.
Truth as participation
If work is being restructured, truth is being redefined.
Historically, truth has been something to discover, verify, and stabilise. Today, it is increasingly something to engage with.

- Users request sources, post “receipts”, and annotate claims
- Content is continuously verified, challenged, and reframed
- Narratives evolve through participation rather than resolution
Verification, in this environment, does not end uncertainty. It extends it.
Each act of checking produces further doubt. Each correction generates new interpretation. Each answer invites another question.
This is not a breakdown of truth. It is a transformation of its function.
Truth is no longer a fixed endpoint. It is an ongoing process.
The collapse of expertise
Within this system, traditional expertise becomes unstable.
Institutional authority — whether in media, science, or governance — is no longer accepted as a given. Instead, it is subjected to continuous public arbitration.

What has changed is who asks — and how often.

On the other sits vibes: intuition, narrative coherence, emotional resonance.
These are often presented as opposing forces. In reality, they operate simultaneously.
People verify information — and then accept or reject it based on how it feels. They engage with evidence — but interpret it through identity and context.
This duality is not irrational. It is adaptive.
In a world of infinite information and uncertain trust, both systems are necessary. Verification manages risk. Vibes maintain coherence.
The problem is that they rarely align.
The acceleration trap
At the same time, the pace of change is increasing.
Skills are acquired faster than ever — and become obsolete just as quickly. New capabilities emerge continuously, creating an environment of permanent adaptation.
This produces a familiar cycle:
Learn → apply → replace → relearn.
Over time, this becomes not just a process, but an identity.
The “professional” becomes the “perpetual learner”. Stability gives way to motion. Mastery gives way to maintenance.
And with that comes a third paradox:
The faster individuals adapt to remain relevant,
the faster relevance itself decays.
Inequality, amplified
These dynamics do not distribute evenly.
AI systems amplify existing differences in access, literacy, and context. Those who understand how to direct them gain disproportionate advantage. Those who do not fall behind more quickly than before.
This is not simply a matter of income or education. It is a matter of behavioural alignment.
The system rewards those who can operate within it — who can navigate its rituals, interpret its outputs, and adapt to its shifts.
Over time, this creates a new form of stratification:
Not just between those who have and have not,
but between those who can mediate their thinking through AI — and those who cannot.
A system of contradiction
Taken together, these forces form a single, coherent structure.
- AI increases capability while reducing independent initiation
- Verification increases while trust decreases
- Expertise fragments while demand for authority persists
- Learning accelerates while relevance decays
At every level, the system produces progress and instability at the same time.
This is not a temporary phase. It is the system working as designed.
AI does not resolve complexity. It makes it manageable.
AI increases what we can do —while reducing how often we begin doing it ourselves.
And in doing so, it creates a world in which:
Certainty is no longer expected — only navigated.
What comes next
The question, then, is not whether AI will reshape society. It already has.
The question is whether we can design systems — cultural, institutional, and commercial — that operate within this new reality without amplifying its risks.
That means:
- Building tools that preserve human agency within automated processes
- Creating trust systems that acknowledge uncertainty rather than eliminate it
- Reframing expertise as transparent and participatory, not absolute
- Anchoring value in forms of human contribution that cannot be easily compressed
Because the final paradox may be the most important:
The systems that make us more capable also make us more dependent.
And the more dependent we become, the more important it is to understand the systems themselves.
AI is not just changing what we do.
It is becoming the layer through which we understand what is real.
And once that happens, the challenge is no longer technological.
It is cultural.
